First United Methodist Church

117 East Franklin Street, Brownsville, Tennessee 38012

At First United Methodist Church, we are believers and followers of Jesus Christ who share the good news of God's love.

The Methodist Church in Brownsville was organized in1824. When the congregation outgrew the building, a wooden church was built on the present site in 1848. This church was replaced by a brick building in 1869. On November 21, 1898, fire destroyed the structure in a matter of hours.

The present sanctuary was built in 1899, and until the structure was finished in November, Methodists held their services in Temple Adas Israel as guest of the Jewish congregation. The building was dedicated November 4, 1900. The "annex" was built in 1917, the Molly Hood Education building was constructed in 1950 and the Chapman Family Life Center was completed in 1989.
